Just because I can do something fast

Doesn’t mean I should do it fast. Speed is emphasized in our fun filled western culture. Unfortunately, when applied in the wrong context, speed can cause suffering. Speed revs up your nervous system. Speed makes you sweat. Speed makes your muscles tense up. Speed makes your blood pressure rise. That’s fine if you’re competing in physical activities, but it’s not fine if you’re working in service or manufacturing. At work, efficiency is important, but not out of control speed. Be mindful of your steps. Don’t race around. Don’t be impatient in the cafeteria line. Slow down. Return to the breath. Take pleasure in the present moment.
