Say thank you to you know who
The Buddha teaches there is no self and the highest virtue is to be mindful of all sentient beings as coequal. This can be confusing. Then why should I ever thank myself for anything? There is an impermanent self, for one thing, the lack of self is pointing to the impermanence of self, not its total nonexistence. Furthermore, we make the mistake of not being equally kind to this impermanent self, distracted by the constant reminders to the beginner to be kind to others around us. Try thanking yourself for simple things, like brushing your teeth and washing your face. Don’t take your own efforts at self care for granted. Then, when your boss at work comes around to give you a compliment, you can simply say, “No thanks, I’ve already been praised all day, I’ve got my fill, please go and compliment some of my colleagues instead.” That’s a joke, intended tongue-in-cheek, of course, but you get my point, no?
